During the course of the 2013 BBC Proms season, the Royal Albert Hall is working in partnership with the BBC Proms to give three groups of young people the opportunity to participate in exclusive workshops with world-class Proms artists.
The first in this incredible series took place on 13 July and saw 26 young singers from Lewisham take part in a workshop with New York-based a cappella vocal group Naturally 7. The students are all members of Vocalize, an award-winning choir based at Sedgehill School and led by the school’s ‘Musician in Residence’, Andy Gilbert.
The workshop began with Naturally 7 discussing various elements of their own musical backgrounds before they went on to demonstrate their stunning range of vocal gymnastics which they term Vocal Play and several of the students bravely got up on stage to try their hands at the vocal play techniques.
Both Naturally 7 and Vocalize performed songs to each other before collaborating on a couple of numbers which they prepared for a surprise performance on the Hall’s South Steps to the Prommers queuing for the evening’s Doctor Who Prom.
Sedgehill student Robert Taylor documented the schools special day and you can see his finished video here:
The other Proms Masterclasses include talented young string players from across London performing to and receiving coaching from award-winning British violinist Daniel Hope, and young brass players from Bromley participating in a workshop with Norwegian trumpet star Tine Thing Helseth. All of the participants involved in the workshops will also be offered tickets to attend the Prom of the artist that they are working with.
