Music history was made at the Royal Albert Hall on 23 March 2013 when ‘Britpop‘ legends Noel Gallagher and Damon Albarn performed live together for the first time as the Teenage Cancer Trust concert series rolled into its 5th day.
The evening began as Super Fury Animals frontman Gruff Rhys performed a support set of songs from his solo career, accompanied only by his metronome.
Series curator Noel Gallagher then took to the stage to introduce Blur members Damon Albarn and Graham Coxon, who grasped the opportunity to play a Kevin Ayers cover, May I, in tribute to the influential singer-songwriter who passed away last month. The pair were then joined by Michael Horovitz, a poet who rose to international prominence following his involvement in the International Poetry Incarnation at the Hall in June 1965. With Paul Weller joining them on keyboard, and Coxon switching to the saxophone, the group performed a piece written especially for the evening.
Then, after a casual ‘Noel?’ from Albarn, the former Oasis member joined the duo on stage to perform Blur’s 1999 single Tender, instantly making musical history as this was the first time Noel and Damon, known for their infamous feuds in the 1990s, had performed live together. To make the event even more extraordinary for fans of British music, Paul Weller joined the temporary supergroup as drummer.
Noel Gallagher then took to the stage for his headlining performance. Joined by his band the High Flying Birds, he raced through a set of Oasis hits and rarities, as well as his recent solo work.
An encore of old Oasis b-side Shout It Out Loud, lasagne-lovers’ favourite Digsy’s Dinner and the anthemic Don’t Look Back in Anger ensured the audience went home happy after another unforgettable night at the Hall for the Teenage Cancer Trust.
Teenage Cancer Trust
Series curator Noel Gallagher presented Alarn and Coxon on stage, once again joined by Charlotte, a cancer patient in remission who shared her story of how the Teenage Cancer Trust supported her through the hardest time of her life following her diagnosis of a Ewing’s sarcoma tumour.
